Beginning:
I wanted to take photos of the school sports teams so they have something to record their performance and proud moments. I needed to balance my schoolwork and photo taking and also balance the time I spent photographing each team.
Development:
I used my time management skills to make sure I maximized my efforts in each areas without sacrificing the other. I also make sure I had a plan for when to photograph which team to make sure I pay similar attention to all the teams and they received the same amount and quality of photos.
Results:
My photos were used everywhere, from social media to sports advertisement to sport events and event marketing and magazines. Most importantly, I felt my photos' important among the players as they saw their proudest moments being recorded forever.
Over the past two years, my journey as a sports photographer for my school’s teams has been both rewarding and challenging. Initially, I started out by capturing images of my friends who were on the teams. It was a casual endeavor, but as I continued, I began to expand my focus, taking photos of more players and sharing them with the entire team after games. This shift quickly transformed my role; players started eagerly asking me when their photos would be ready right after the games. I found myself explaining that I needed to get home to sort and edit the images before sending them out, a process that sometimes took longer than I anticipated.
Despite the time constraints and the balancing act of schoolwork alongside my photography, the players were incredibly understanding and supportive. Their enthusiasm kept me motivated, even when I had to delay the editing process due to other commitments. However, this also meant navigating the expectations that came with the growing popularity of my photos. It was exciting to see my work being shared on social media, but it also added pressure to maintain a consistent output, especially during tournament seasons when requests multiplied.
As I became more involved, players invited me to accompany them to competitions at other schools, and I often had to apologize to some teams because I couldn’t be in multiple places at once. It was challenging to manage my time and commitments, especially when multiple teams from different divisions sought my presence at their events. I felt a mixture of pride and guilt; I wanted to support everyone, but the reality of my schedule limited me.
With each game, I noticed a gradual change in how players interacted with me. They began greeting me with enthusiasm, and I was often given a special place next to the referee during volleyball and basketball games. This recognition filled me with joy and a sense of belonging, particularly when I witnessed the smiles on the faces of players who received my photos. Knowing I was documenting their hard work and dedication meant the world to me.
Beyond just taking photos, I also looked for small ways to support the teams. Whether it was buying Gatorade for the players to share or running to the drinking fountain to help them fill up their water bottles when they were busy, I wanted to contribute in any way I could. These little acts of kindness added up, yet they sometimes felt overwhelming alongside my primary task of photography.
The culmination of my efforts came unexpectedly during a sports awards dinner. I was there to photograph the players receiving their awards and to set up a hallway showcasing printed photos of the teams. To my shock, I was presented with the Special Service Award of the year, greeted by cheers from players and coaches. While the recognition validated my contributions to the sports community, what truly moved me was witnessing players after the dinner. They took the printed photos off the wall and began signing them for each other, sharing words of encouragement and laughter. It was a beautiful moment that highlighted the connections my work helped foster.
Through all the challenges of balancing my responsibilities, managing expectations, and navigating the social dynamics of the sports community, I found a deep sense of acceptance and purpose. I felt not only like an observer but a valued member of the community, contributing to memories and bonds that would last a lifetime. My role as a photographer extended beyond simply capturing moments; it became a way to enrich the experiences of the athletes and create lasting connections among them.
